- January 2, 2010 – The first of three accidents in Uttar Pradesh on this day takes place near the town of Etawah, about 170 miles (270 kilometres) southwest of Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh state, when the Lichchavi Express entering the station in heavy fog runs into the stationary Magadh Express train stopped there. Ten people, including the driver of one of the trains, are injured.[1] At least 10 people are reported to have been killed.[2]
- January 2, 2010 – All seven coaches of the Arunachal Pradesh Express, running between Murkongselek and Rangiya derail between Helem and Nij Bogaon in Assam, India in the early hours of the day. No passengers are hurt.[5]
- January 4, 2010 – Helsinki, Finland – An intercity train breaks in two, and four carriages crash into the main railway station's concrete buffer stop. Timely actions of operators and a guard divert the train to a secondary track, and the platform was evacuated. One of the carriages plunges into the Holiday Inn hotel's offices causing severe structural damage. The only casualty was the conductor of the train, which carried no passengers, who was slightly hurt.[7]
- January 16, 2010 – Three people die and around a dozen are injured when two express trains collide in thick fog near Tundla, 25 kilometres (16 mi) from Agra, in India's northern state of Uttar Pradesh. The driver of one of the trains apparently did not react to a signal, slamming his train into another on the same track.[11][12][13][14]
- January 17, 2010 – The Lucknow-Sultanpur Harihar Nath Express strikes a car at an unmanned railway crossing under Haidergarh police station area on Sunday afternoon in Barabanki district, India. Two persons traveling in the car die on the spot and four others who sustained serious injuries are referred to Trauma Centre in Lucknow. Train traffic on this route is disrupted for nearly two hours after the accident. This is the fifth accident in a series of similar accidents in the area.[15][16]
- February 12, 2010 at 10:13 a.m. A train derails in the pocket track just north of Farragut North Washington Metro station when the front car leaves the tracks. Of the nearly 400 passengers on board, one person is taken to hospital.
- March 15, 2010 – A METRO bus collides with a light rail METRO train in Houston, Texas, injuring nearly 20 people.[19]
- March 24, 2010 – Sixteen goods wagons runaway for 8 km (5 mi) from a goods yard at Alnabu in Oslo to hit and destroy a quayside warehouse. Three people die, and four are seriously injured.[20]
- March 30, 2010 – No one was injured in the freight train derailment, which happened around 3 p.m. when three non-operating locomotives derailed and nine freight cars went off the tracks near Pickering GO station [21]
- April 1, 2010 – A locomotive runs into a stationary passenger train after its brakes fail during a test ride in Spišská Nová Ves, Slovakia, killing three people and injuring seriously eight others.[22]
- April 21, 2010 – The coaches of a luxury tourist train operated by Rovos Rail, run away and derail outside Pretoria during a locomotive changeover. Three crew members die in the incident: two die at the scene while the third, a woman four months pregnant, dies in hospital. The accident also leaves 9 passengers injured, six of them critically.[24]
- May 25, 2010 – A passenger train derails at Naugachia, injuring eleven people.[28]
- May 28, 2010 – A train derails in the West Midnapore district of West Bengal, India, caused by either sabotage or a bomb that damaged the railway track, and is struck by an oncoming goods train, resulting in at least 90 passenger deaths.[29]
- June 18, 2010 – Eight coaches and two engines of the Vasco-Howrah Amaravati Express (8048) derail near Koppal in Karnataka, India after the train strikes a road roller at an unmanned level-crossing. Six persons, including the drivers of the road roller and the train, are injured.[35]
- June 20, 2010 – A steam-hauled passenger train from Pretoria to Cullinan derails near Cullinan owing to defective track. A number of sleepers had been stolen. 15F 4-8-2 No 3117 is severely damaged as it ends up lying on its side.[36]
- June 28, 2010 – A CityElefant passenger train from Prague to Ústí nad Labem derails while entering the Ústí nad Labem station, killing the driver and injuring 11 passengers. The cause of the derailment is unknown; the train's 108 km/h (67 mph) speed exceeded the local 50 km/h (31 mph) speed limit and may have been a factor.[40]
- July 13, 2010 – Two trains collide at Korzybie, north Poland, injuring 36.[41]
- July 25, 2010 – The driver and a second rail worker are injured when a Speno railgrinder fails to stop in front of the buffer stop at Stavoren, the Netherlands. A shop lying behind the track is demolished.[47]
- August 6, 2010 – One person dies and about 40 are injured in a train derailment in Naples, Italy, on the Circumvesuviana railway.
- August 6, 2010 – A passenger train strikes a minibus near Kiryat Gat in southern Israel; seven people die and 20 are injured.[48]
- August 17, 2010 - The Intercity-Express from Frankfurt to Paris hits a truck that had slid onto the rail near Lambrecht. The first two carriages derail and ten people are injured, one seriously.[50]
- August 25, 2010 – A Metrorail commuter train strikes a minibus taxi carrying children to school. Ten are killed and five injured. Witnesses state that the minibus drove around closed booms; the driver is charged with culpable homicide.[52]
- September 10, 2010 - A conductor loses his arm when two trains collide in Fontana, CA.
- September 12, 2010 – A woman dies, two people are seriously injured, and 15 more are brought to hospital with minor injuries, after an X 2000 high speed train collides with a backhoe loader at Kimstad near Linköping.[53]
- September 20, 2010 – 34 die and over 160 are injured when a speeding freight going towards Indore, Madhya Pradesh rear-ends a stationary Indore - Gwalior Intercity Express at Badarwas, Shivpuri, Madhya Pradesh. The locomotive of the Intercity Express remained on the same place and the coaches behind it jumped over it. Preliminary reports indicate that the freight, traveling at 95 km/h (59 mph), overshot the signal and the pointsman was unable to divide the loop line from the main line, putting the freight on the same line where the Intercity train was standing.
- September 24, 2010 – At least 6 people are injured when the engine and a bogie of the Kasganj-Lucknow train derails near Kasganj railway station at 5:30 am while passing through a culvert near Kasganj in Kanshi Ram Nagar district.[54]
- September 24, 2010 - Two trains collide at Bir El Bay, killing one and injuring 57.
- September 25, 2010 - A freight train derails after hitting a landslip in the Manawatu Gorge. The crew are unhurt but the line is closed for nine days while the slip is cleared.[55]
- September 30, 2010 - A Wellington commuter EMU derails after striking a landslip and is struck less than a minute later by a sister unit travelling on the opposite line. Two people are hospitalised and others suffe light injuries. The drivers of the two units are father-and-son.
- October 2, 2010 - A train crash at Solo kills one person.[56]
- November 5, 2010 - Six passengers are injured when a lorry falls off an overbridge onto a passing train at Oxshott, Surrey (pictured). The driver of the lorry is seriously injured.[58]
- December 23, 2010 - A passenger train runs into a freight train at 3:10 AM in near Aegviidu in Northern Estonia. Two empty passenger cars are destroyed and six empty cargo cars derail. The passenger train driver dies, and the freight train conductor and his coworker are injured.
- December 28, 2010 - a passenger train runs into a large amout of ice in Summit Tunnel, Warland, Lancashire and derails.[59]
2011
- January 1, 2011 – Amritsar-Sealdah Akaltakth Express strikes two trucks in Uttar Pradesh's Jaunpur district when the truck driver "failed to notice" the red signal at a level crossing at Babura railway crossing, killing a man (a truck driver) and leaving two people (another truck driver and a helper) injured. No passengers are injured in the collision.[60]
- January 1, 2011 – Two passenger trains collide in Buenos Aires, injuring 45 people.[61]
- January 3, 2011 – Four wagons of a goods train derail in the Dadri area of Ghaziabad district of Uttar Pradesh. The goods train is going towards Aligarh from Delhi when the mishap occurred. No one is injured in the accident. Train traffic on the Ghaziabad-Aligarh section on the Delhi-Howrah trunk route is disrupted following the derailment.[62]
- January 4, 2011 - Kings Mountain, NC, An Amtrak train hits a tractor trailer stuck on a steep grade crossing. No injuries are reported. This is the third incident involving a collision of a train with a semi truck since the previous ones on March 2008 and September 2006.
- January 29, 2011 – 2011 Saxony-Anhalt train accident - a freight train and a passenger train collide near Hordorf in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany on the Magdeburg–Thale line. The passenger train derails. Ten people die and 23 people are injured.[63]
- February 4, 2011 – An Amtrak train collides with a snowplow in Dearborn, Michigan on Monroe Street. The driver of the plow is seriously injured. A city spokeperson says the plow got caught in a rail and the driver did not have enough time to get it out before the Chicago-bound train struck it.[64]
- February 17, 2011 – According to AOL News online, a train departing from Retiro station in the capital runs into the back of another train near San Miguel rail station. 4 passengers die, 120 injured, 14 severely. Federal Judge Juan Manuel Yalj is in charge of the investigation. Two of the four brakes from the Ferrobaires train's engine are reported unusable because "one was blocked and the other had been locked and nailed down."
- March 11, 2011 – 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami - four trains are missing on lines running along the north east coast of Japan following an earthquake and subsequent tsunami.[65] They are found later, it was just general confusion and phone network breakdown.
- March 13, 2011 – 2011 California BART train derailment - two cars of a ten car BART train derail in Northern California. Three minor back injuries are reported.[66]
- March 27, 2011 – About 20 cars of a 116-car train derail Sunday afternoon near Port Hope en route to Toronto. Families in 20 houses flee and a major passenger rail corridor is shut down. One empty derailed car catches fire and burns for about an hour.[67]
- March 28, 2011 – A CSX train traveling through Newton Falls, Ohio with an estimated 100 cars of mixed freight (including hoppers and tankers), suffers a 12-car derailment at approximately 7:00am (local time) Eastern Daylight Time. Three rail cars fall off a bridge and onto Center Street.[68] Several of the tank cars are carrying chlorine; none are involved in the derailment. Initial reports indicate that at least one car may have leaked ammonia, but officials do not believe that any hazardous materials have escaped into the environment. Residents within 500 feet of the incident are evacuated, and most roads leading into town are closed by law enforcement officers. Local HAZMAT officials arrive to assess the scene, and the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation opens an inquiry into the incident "as a matter of standard procedure."[69][70]
- April 7, 2011 – Two trains collide near Netanya, injuring 60 people.[71]
- April 17, 2011 – A Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway train hauling 130 cars of coal from Wyoming to Chicago rear-ends another train hauling maintenance equipment near Red Oak, Iowa about 7 a.m. (local time) on Sunday, April 17, 2011. The lead locomotive on the coal train derails and fire engulfs the cab. The crew of two, the conductor and engineer, on the coal train are killed. Ten cars on the maintenance train derail. The two crew members on the maintenance train are not injured. The line is heavily trafficked and is shut down for 24 hours, with trains re-routed. An investigation is conducted by the NTSB.[72][73]
- April 27, 2011 - Six people are killed and 61 injured in Alishan when a falling tree strikes a train carrying mostly tourists from mainland China.[74]
- April 28, 2011 – A train derails after hitting a truck in Mosty, Pomeranian Voivodeship, killing two and injuring at least twenty people.[75]
- May 20, 2011 – 857 people are injured, 25 seriously, when a rear-end collision occurs at Soweto.[76]
- May 27, 2011 – The limited-express train Super Ōzora No. 14, en route from Kushiro to Sapporo in Hokkaido, catches fire in a tunnel on the Sekishō Line after the second car of the six-car formation derails. None of the 245 passengers and crew are killed, but 39 are treated for smoke inhalation or minor burn injuries, and the train is a total loss. It is the first in a series of incidents over the summer that lead to harsh criticism of JR Hokkaido's safety procedures, as well as the apparent suicide of the company president.[77]
- June 3, 2011 – A Burlington Northern commuter train from Aurora, Illinois and an Amtrak train heading to Carbondale, Illinois collide at Chicago's Union Station at about 8:15 A.M, injuring at least five people. One of the trains derails.[78]
- June 24, 2011 – Reno, Nevada: Despite the working signals on the track, a semi truck, driving on a rural stretch of U.S. Route 95 near Reno and Sparks, strikes one of the cars of a west-bound California Zephyr Amtrak passenger train, killing at least six, according to Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Dan Lopez and the Churchill County Sheriff's Office (the driver of the semi-truck rig, whose reason or motivation remains unclear at this time, and an Amtrak conductor on board the train are two confirmed deaths so far).[79]
- July 7, 2011 - A Mathura Chhapra Express train rams into a bus carrying wedding guests around 2 a.m. at an unmanned railway crossing in Thanagaon, Kanshiram Nagar district, Uttar Pradesh, killing 38 and injuring 30.[80]
- July 10, 2011 – Fatehpur derailment - The Kalka Mail train running from Howrah to Delhi derails near the town of Fatehpur in Uttar Pradesh, killing 70 people and injuring more than 300.[81][82]
- July 10, 2011 – The engine along with four coaches of the Guwahati Puri Express derails between Rangiya and Ghagrapar, Nalbari district, Assam and capsizes in a rivulet, injuring more than 100 people, 20 critically.[83]
- July 11, 2011 – An Amtrak Downeaster passenger train from Boston, Massachusetts heading to Portland, Maine is struck by a garbage truck at a crossing in North Berwick, Maine, killing the driver of the truck and setting the locomotive and one passenger car on fire.[84]
- July 21, 2011 - A Rock Island Line Metra train destined for Chicago strikes an automobile at a rail crossing between the Tinley Park and Oak Forest stations at about 4 p.m. Traveling as fast as 60 miles per hour (97 km/h), the train crushes the vehicle; 2 women inside die. Of the 89 passengers aboard, seven are taken to local hospitals with what police characterized as minor injuries.
- July 23, 2011 – Wenzhou train collision - Reportedly due to signal failures, a high-speed train rear-ends a stopped high-speed train at a speed of 180 km/h (110 mph) near Wenzhou in the province of Zhejiang, killing at least 39 people and injuring over 200.[85] Five carriages derail and fall off a bridge.[86]
- July 26, 2011 – Seven goods wagons roll uncontrolled 2 km (1.2 mi) and then derail and crash into a Strzelce Krajeńskie Wschód rail station building. Three people die.[87]
- July 31, 2011 – The engine and some coaches of the Guwahati Bangalore Express derail and are hit by another train in Malda district, West Bengal. At least three people are killed and 200 injured.[88]
- August 12, 2011 – 2011 Baby derailment - A passenger train with 280 passengers derails due to high speed at Baby, Piotrków County, Poland, killing one passenger and injuring 84.[89]
- August 31, 2011 - Two goods trains collide near Tangiriapal railway station, about 65 km (40 mi) from Keonjhar on the Jakhapura-Banspani railway line around 1:30 am. Five members of the train crew are killed.[90]
- September 13, 2011 - A passenger train fails to slow at a signal and slams into a stationary cargo train near Chennai, Tamil Nadu, killing 10 and injuring 52.[91]
- September 13, 2011 - In Flores district, Buenos Aires, a bus crashes into a train, which derails and collides with a second train, killing 11 and injuring 228, 20 severely. Lights were flashing but the crossing barriers may have been blocked from fully lowering.[92][93]
- September 15, 2011 - A collision in Buenos Aires between a bus, a cement truck and a light-rail train injures 90 people during morning rush hour traffic.[94]
- September 17, 2011 - A passenger train rams into an observation car at the back of another train near Alawwa, about 60 km (37 mi) northeast of Colombo, killing 3 and injuring 27.[95]
- October 7, 2011 - 26 cars of a 131-car freight train derail and explode near Tiskilwa in Bureau County, Illinois, approximately 100 miles (160 km) west of Chicago. No injuries are reported; 800 people are evacuated.[96][97]
- October 12, 2011 - In Oakland, California a southbound Amtrak San Joaquin train passes a red signal and collides with a stopped Coast Starlight train at low speed, injuring 17 people.[98]
- October 31, 2011 - A Sabah State Railway train carrying 200 passengers collides with a fuel tanker in Kota Kinabalu resulting in an explosion injuring 12 passengers.[99]
- November 2, 2011 - A freight train collides with a school bus in a rural area of San Luis Province, 8 girls are killed and 41 are injured.[100]
- November 22, 2011 - A fire on board a Doon Express train in Jharkhand destroys two coaches, killing 7 people including one Australian woman.[101]
- November 24, 2011 - A Via Rail passenger train strikes and kills a woman walking along a heavily used train corridor in Pickering.[102]
- December 17, 2011 - A CSX train strikes a car crossing the tracks at an unsignaled private railroad crossing in Holts Corner, TN. Two people in the car, a woman and her grandson, die in the crash.[103]
- December 19, 2011 - A 2-car Arriva Trains Wales class 175 collides with a P-series Scania articulated lorry carrying hay at Llanboidy level crossing near Whitland, West Wales, injuring 7 people. The lorry driver is released on bail. Engineers take two days to clear the wreckage, and the train is dragged back to Whitland by a class 66 locomotive for collection by road.
- December 22, 2011 - An Amtrak train heading from Seattle, WA to Chicago, IL strikes a pedestrian in Monroe, WA[104]
- December 22, 2011 - A southbound Acela train fatally strikes a trespasser near Philadelphia, PA.
- December 27, 2011 - Flood waters from Tropical Cyclone Grant derail a freight train on a bridge near Katherine, south of Darwin, injuring one crew member.[105][106]
